Day 12

Posted by Picasa

Josie had another good day today and continues to make progress. Her billi level went down for a second straight day, so she was taken off the lights. This means Josie is able to wear clothes again which was exciting. Dr. Lankford, the neonatologist, thinks she has developed breastmilk jaundice, which means she may have a mildly elevated billi level while she is drinking breastmilk. He said the benefits outweigh the risk, so she can continue with her normal feedings.

The nurses continue to lower the air temperature in her isolette as she controls her body temperature more. The doctor told us today that she will need to control her body temperature on her own for 48 hours in a crib before she can go home. He also said she will need to have a couple of days of good bottle feeds without any breathing issues. Today, Josie did much better with her feeds and continues to have fewer issues. We had a great nurse named Wendy, that worked with me over the last couple of days to identify when she starts to have issues during feeds. Hopefully, we continue to improve on this tomorrow. The doctor said Josie might be able to come home by early next week if she continues making progress on these two things. He also said that since she hasn't had an apnea spell in over 48 hours that she wouldn't need to go home on a monitor.

Grandma and Grandpa Scott came to visit today and were able to watch a feeding. Josie was fairly sleepy while they were there, but woke up for Chad and I during the evening feeding. We were able to get some new pictures while she was awake that are in the web album now.

More tomorrow...
