Josie had a great beginning of the week. We really thought we were out of the woods for a hospital visit but Josie had different plans. Thursday I woke up with muscle spasms in my neck and back. I was so sore I couldn't even pick Josie up so Chad planned to take me to Urgent Care Thursday morning. As we were getting ready, the balloon that holds Josie's g-tube in place burst and her g-tube came out. She rolled over on her tummy and got very upset. Chad and I vented her g-tube thinking she just had some gas that couldn't get out of her tummy. When we picked her up her g-tube fell out and formula began coming out of where the g-tube had been. Chad and I responded quickly putting a backup g-tube in the exposed hole in her tummy and taping it in place. We rushed her to the ER in Pittsburg to have it put back in. Unforunately, we spent 5 hours there just to learn that the doctors weren't sure they could put it in properly. We were able to reach the surgeon's nurse in KC and she advised us to drive Josie to Children's Mercy. Sooo we made a hurried trip to KC and arrived a few minutes before the surgeons office closed. Three of his nurses checked the g-tube placement and filled the balloon to keep it in place. Then we did quick x-rays to verify it was in the correct place and were on our way home. We learned that as long as we get the backup tube in we have time to drive Josie to KC and have them put it in for us. The main concern is if we can't get the backup tube in for some reason and the opening could close on the way to KC. We are hoping that doesn't happen again any time soon. It's a little unnerving to see an open hole on your baby's tummy. Josie really dealt with it well as she does with everything she's been through. On a good note, Josie has figured out how to play peek-a-boo this week. She will even cover her own face and when Chad says "Where's the cute baby?" she pulls the blanket off her face and smiles. She is also sitting up better as you can see from the picture. We are hopefull that she will begin to catch up developmentally now that she feels better. She already made a lot of progress in the short week after surgery.
